For those who don't know, one of the senior consultants and owners of my company is an AIESEC alumnus back from 90s. So, the other day we had a nice chat about AIESEC: how it was and what it is now.
And there were a couple of his thoughts that made me ponder:
First, if you compare AIESEC in Finland back 15 years ago and right now, it's like 2 different organizations. In the sense of results, etc. Gosh, they did make a difference. But his point was that at that time Finland was in a big economic depression. The level of unemployment was around 20%. Even the brightest students found it difficult to find a job and, of course, they went to volunteer organizations like AIESEC. And now there are so many great opportunities, that AIESEC is basically struggling. Makes me think about the future of AIESEC as an organization.
Another point was about alumni networking. He told that the reason why AIESEC Connect and other similar efforts have been continuously failing is the lack of dynamic content. For example, AIESECers could be doing some profound research and use it for credits at unis, but also to offer to externals and alumni as an area of competence or in ICX sales (here what we do, other can do the same). I know, that may sound a bit impossible, but it has a lot of reasoning behind. Most of AIESEC alumni are business people. If you want to reach them, they need to see a business opportunity. Otherwise, there is no point to be registering in some version of LinkedIn working worse only.
