It is never enough. Whatever goals you set,there are still more ambitious ones. And in the end there are only 24 hours a day.

What occured me sometime ago is, actually, it all does not matter. If you look at older people most of them are respected and have achieved a lot. Day by day, brick by brick.

Homesick

How do you realize that you are missing something? I mean missing emotionally important people, places, experiences?

With me it goes like this - usually there is nothing for a long period of time - no sadness, no nothing. I've been living outside my home country (Uzbekistan, not Pakistan, Ukzbekistan, Uzbekkia and whatever else some people try to come up) for the last 4 years; separated from my family - for two; saying good-bye to some people and meeting new ones - all the time. And yet, somehow there has not been any really big and sour feeling.

And then, suddenly, I just want to go back. Or things remind me my past chaotically.
And then ... well then I'll do my best and visit Uzbekistan this year ;)

Flying

Jan 2 and I am on my first intercontinental flight. Helsinki - London (England) –Toronto – London (Ontario).
A new country, a new school. An exchange for 1 semester
Honestly, it’s quite weird to finally come to a country the language of which I’ve been studying since I was 7. Hm, just out of curiosity, are there more people in Heathrow right now than in Helsinki ;)? Probably not, but still, you can breathe a huge difference.
I wonder, how much time it will take me to stop saying “kiitos” and “anteeksi” automatically  And get used to Canadian English?
So, if you happen to come to Canada, just let me know!!!
P.S.: Yesterday heard that Russia stopped supplying gas to Ukraine. Politics, politics… Let’s see what happens.
P.P.S.: It’s funny to look at people in the airport. Everyone has a small world limited to him and his friends. It all seems to be chaotic. And still, very well managed. Reminds the world. Here is a kid. Apparently, a several-hour waiting time is not for him :) He started with crying, then shouting, then, after realizing that the airport won’t stop functioning just to observe him, he decided to entertain himself. First took his ex-snowwhite hoodie, put it on his head and starting walking around. After continuous pledges from his mother, two falls and then finally losing his hoodie to his temper-losing Mummy, he decided to get to know with everyone. We are already acquaintances :) But, I guess his calmer peer is a better mate. Some travel alone, some travel with friends, some with families, some with the loved ones. There are tourists, business people, students, anyone.

Years 2008 and 2009

I will remember this year for:
• Salsa. A great social event (thanks Heini and other organizers). Lots of great people. And…

• …visiting my family. Unfortunately, it doesn’t happen too often these days. And still, they are all very special. Which connects me to…
• …the trip to Ukraine. It was a great time seeing the dearest and nearest again. Thank you Mummy and Daddy for arrangements, Vika for being a sweet little sis (not so little any more, though), my “Break-through” for a great time we spent together, Sveta for the crazy one day trip to L’viv! And that was followed by…
• … a fascinating semester at school. Old friends, new friends. Thesis (seriously, it was fun, though I’m still happy to have finished it finally :)). Lots of courses. Sleepless nights. Anyway, I am now very-very close to my Bachelor’s degree. Yahoo! And that was combined with…
• … work. I’ve been working for Synocus, a Finnish consulting agency. Absolutely loved it. Great corporate culture, interesting job. Of coz, there have been challenging and boring times, but that is everywhere. This all reminds me about another organization, where you “don’t work part-time, nor do you full-time, you work…. all the time”…
• … AIESEC. I am finally a full and complete alumna. Surprisingly, no regrets. Now I can say that I’ve done everything I wanted and even too much. And gave as much as I could. It’s a great place to be, but I should have moved on half a year ago. Still, thanks a lot to my last Executive Board and Talent Management Team, SUCCESS Organizing Committee Team and LC KY. And, definitely, one thing I am incredibly grateful the organization for is …
• …. my friends. Actually, not only through AIESEC. I won’t be putting a list of “my best friends”. And still, guys, I do remember those wonderful moments which we’ve spent together. Even when being at distance. Travelling with you all around Europe (the Baltic trip, facilitating in Norway (thanks Mashka ;), holiday in Paris (Anyuta, you are super cool :)), them visiting Hki (Inochka and Nastyuha) and more and more). And the best part is that there are even more amazing people out there. Looking forward ;) One of the beautiful things connected with knowing people is…
• … travelling. I have already mentioned some of the incredible trips I’ve had. And there was one more, which definitely stands out. Trip to Lapland. Now I am a certified elf ;) So, you can invite me for visits. I bring luck ;) First time skying. Visiting the fanciest restaurant so far in my life. Visiting a raindeer farm. Seriously, they are sooo cute. Lots of other activities. And, most importantly, enjoying being close to someone very-very special. Thank you Tuomas! And, one more thing is…
• … Finnish. Now, I can finally read newspapers and understand the spoken language. Can even speak if needed :)
And my New Year resolution is…
• to get a driver’s license… too much talked about, not it’s time to act :)

Как богатому пережить кризис? (А. Царев)

Кризис, конечно затронул и нас, обеспеченных людей. Как это не удивительно, мы тоже думаем об экономии. Поделюсь своими идеями и находками. Надеюсь многим читателям «Работницы» это будет полезно.

Прежде всего, подход к экономии семейного бюджета и личных расходов должен быть комплексным, взвешенным. Проанализируйте основные статьи своих расходов, как это сделала я.

Экономия на отоплении. Все гениальное просто. Мы взяли и снизили температуру в гостевом домике до плюс 14. ниже нельзя, так как может начать портиться антиквариат. Если гости к нам соберутся, то за 2-3 часа температуру легко вернуть до комфортной. Зачем оплачивать обогрев пустующего домика? Конечно, с 800 квадратных метров много не наэкономишь, но как говорится, курочка по зернышку клюет. К тому же у многих наверняка гостевые домики куда больше.

Экономия на еде. Для меня это, пожалуй, самое легкое из ограничений. К еде я отношусь очень и очень спокойно. Но поле для бережливости здесь поистине огромное. Во-первых, я поручила своему фуд-стилисту теперь присутствовать при закупке свежих продуктов в Провансе и Бордо. Получается не намного, но дешевле и в качестве уверена больше. Во-вторых, я обратила внимание младшего повара на недорогие местные магазины. Раньше я пренебрегала качеством «Глобус Гурмэ», но это было лишь пустым предрассудком. Свежий хлеб и русские овощи у них очень недурны.

Оказывается хамон можно покупать небольшими кусочками по 1-2 килограмма. Так он не успевает портиться. Еще я отказалась от трюфелей. В этом году во Франции не урожай, поэтому цены на них задраны, а качество не ахти. Всем советую также не бросаться на эту пустышку и устроить себе небольшой трюфельный пост.

Экономия на транспорте. Я практически сразу же отказалась от поездок на личном транспорте. В условиях кризиса это важная статья расходов и опять же головная боль. Как ни удивительно, служебный Lexus оказался ничуть не хуже. И во многом даже удобнее, так как оборудован проблесковым маячком. Кстати, у нас гибридный LS600 и Никита (водитель – прим ред.) говорит, что это очень экономичное авто. Всем рекомендую, не сочтите за навязчивую рекламу марки.

Экономия на жилье. Я слышала многие советуют сдавать лишнее жилье. Но ведь это так хлопотно и совсем не быстро. Мы вот свои два подъезда в Гранд-Парке безуспешно сдаем уже месяц. Так сложно найти толкового риэлтора (вздыхает)! Но я надеюсь, сдадим. И это покроет наши текущие расходы на содержание в приличном виде гольф-поля и тренажерного комплекса.

Экономия на персонале. С людьми сложнее всего. К ним привыкаешь, они становятся практически членами семьи. Но в кризис всем приходится затягивать пояса. Я вот вынуждена вывести за штат нашего грумера (парикмахер животных – прим. Ред.), а фуд-стилиста попросить заняться еще и фуд-баингом. С инструктором по керлингу пришлось совсем расстаться. Но Леша (супруг – прим. Ред.) поблагодарил его и насколько мне известно здорово помог его родине, Исландии.

Экономия на развлечениях. Для многих это будет серьезным ударом. Но мы люди семейные, тихие, так что нам проще. Супруг заказал музыкальную систему STEINWAY LYNGDORF. Она пристойно звучит, так что мы теперь многих исполнителей слушаем в записи, а не приглашаем домой. Хотя я не удержалась и Диму (имеется ввиду Хворостовский, прим. Ред. ) попросила к нам подъехать, поиграть немного на пиано. Мне не очень нравится, как он поет, а вот играет замечательно (смеется).

Экономия на хобби. Да-да, увы, теперь мне приходится экономить на самом для меня приятном. Например, в этом году я отказалась от идеи завершить формирование коллекции поздних импрессионистов. Это бы потребовало слишком больших затрат. Зато, приятная мелочь (смеется) - совсем недорого мне досталось два полотна русских авангардистов и золотой саркофаг эпохи среднего Царства.

Экономия на расточительных мелочах. Здесь опять не удержусь от повторения азбучных истин. Попросите дворецкого запрограммировать систему «Умный дом», чтобы она выключала свет, когда вы уходите с какого-либо этажа. Попросите финансиста внимательнее вести подсчет расходов. Округляйте счета только до 100 тысяч рублей. Найдите что-то, что тяготит вас больше чем радует и продайте. Леша (супруг – прим. Ред.) например, продал свой банк. Я – коллекцию черных бриллиантов, хотя и пришлось отстегнуть акулам из Sotheby's их процент.

Так что, дорогие мои, богатые тоже платят, платят за кризис.

Financial crisis

As you probably know, one of the biggest victims of the ongoing global financial crisis is the state of Iceland. Google has a lot to say about this topic. But basically, thanks to the deregulation, Iceland has been enjoying a considerable economic growth during the last decade. And their banks grew overconfident, widely borrowing abroad to finance its expansion. Anyway, now the money being expensive and the amount of debt several times the GDP of the country, icelandic banks have gone bankrupt and so may the country. Or has almost done.

Btw, about Iceland. Most of the media speak about the crisis in the country as its economy collapses. But here is an interesting prospective by someone who is from Iceland.

So, to make a long story short, some time ago I deposited money into Kaupthing, at that point the biggest private bank in Iceland. When everything started to become increasing risky, I was still keeping my money there: you never know how things may change. Then on Wed morning I read that some of investors from the UK couldn't access there online bank accounts in Icesave, an online savings brand owned by yet another bankrupt bank from Iceland, Landsbanki. This made me think that now it's THE time.

Then, in the afternoon, there was a meeting was a PhD student from the Helsinki School of Economics, Hendrik Hielkema, who has just finished his Master's Thesis on a topic related to my Bachelor's Thesis. Being a business student, it's quite easy to end up chit-chatting about financial crisis. And he also told me, "Try to transfer the money now. If you still can".

I did. That was Wednesday afternoon.

And on Thursday morning Kaupthing filed for bankruptcy. And Finland officially prohibited any withdrawals or transfers from the bank, especially those to and/or from Iceland.

Luckily my transaction was done before the bankruptcy. I got all the money and even a small interest. But my colleague had all his savings there and he didn't... On top of that, it's not clear if the money is gonna be repaid: the state of Iceland guaranteed the first 20 000€ and then 5 000€ more by Finland. But what if Iceland is bankrupt?

I still haven't completely realised what has happened. Apparently, it had lots of luck for me, but still. Makes me think....
